Sadly, it isn’t possible for us to give a DiamondScore for shop certified diamonds, as the grading can be errr, lets say “a little inconsistent” compared to the main independent laboratories. Don’t get us wrong. A great diamond is a great diamond, whoever it’s certified by… you just need to be confident that the seller has nothing to gain by exaggerating how good it actually is.

If you really are intrigued, you can take it to an independent valuer or independent lab to verify what you have.

If you are buying a shop certified diamond

Be careful if you buy a diamond certified by the shop selling it. On the surface, it might look like a great deal, but there are considerable variations in the price of diamonds if you only consider the 4 C’s.

For example, if you search for a 1-carat round brilliant loose diamond at Quality Diamonds, you will see that prices vary between £3,000 and £20,000. This is due to other attributes which will affect the “sparkle”, quality and value of the diamond.

If you are selling a shop certified diamond

It’s not so easy to value a diamond that has been certified by the shop that has sold it. Independent laboratories have strict and consistent grading standards, which may or may not be present if the shop grades it own diamonds.

It is possible to get a “ball-park” selling value, but to find out the exact amount you would receive, you will probably need to take or send the diamond to the person who would eventually purchase it from you.
